The Promise: The Coming of the Christ Child

What the Bible says about Christ's first advent

Jesus had to grow up in the same ways that we do.  Let's not forget these important areas of growth for our families in this new year!

"And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man."

Luke 2:52

There was no special physical beauty about Christ nor the usual things that would make Him popular with people.  The important thing is who He was, and what He did.

"For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him."

Isaiah 53:2

Jesus is a “light to the Gentiles.”

"Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:  For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,  Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;  A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel."

Luke 2:29-32

After Jesus was born, why did Mary bring an offering to the Temple in Jerusalem?

"And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they [Joseph and Mary] brought him [Jesus] to Jerusalem, to present him [Jesus] to the Lord; (As it is written in the law of the Lord,  Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;) And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons."

Those shepherds were never the same again, for they had met their Messiah!

"And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them."

Luke 2:20

The shepherds heard the heavenly choir that night when they met the Savior.  If you are looking for peace, you should meet Him too.

"Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."

Luke 2:12-14

Just like the prophets had been foretelling over the centuries, God did send us the Savior.

"And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.  And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn."

Luke 2:6-7

The Holy Spirit was the means that made the Virgin Birth possible.  If God can create and run a universe, surely a baby isn't too hard for Him to create.

"Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?  And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God."

Jesus is the Son of God and the eternal King of kings.  Our lives need to bring Him glory!

"He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:  And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end."

Luke 1:32-33
