Jesus Grew Up

Jesus had to grow up in the same ways that we do.  Let's not forget these important areas of growth for our families in this new year!

"And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man."

Luke 2:52

“And Jesus increased”
Jesus, the God-man needed to develop as we do as human beings.  The word “increased” means “advancing,” as men who are cutting a path through the forest are “advancing.”  Jesus learned to walk and talk as all human children do.  He was an apprentice carpenter to His “father” Joseph, learning the craft of woodworking.  Note these areas of Jesus’ development.

“In wisdom.”
Mental growth.  His brain grew from use.  He knew how to think.  He grew wise from His time in the Word and relationship with His Father.

“And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him,” (Luke 2:40).

“And stature,”
Physical growth.  The Greek word for “stature” means “age.”  Jesus gained years and as He did, He not only grew up physically as a man, but He also matured.

“And in favor with God.”
Spiritual growth.  “Favor” = “grace.”  He grew in grace with God.  His personal relationship with God increased.  He spent time alone with God and fed His soul.

“And man.”
Social growth.  He developed in the social “graces,” He had friends, He knew the etiquette of His culture.  He had a genuine concern for people.

“Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favor and good understanding in the sight of God and man,” (Proverbs 3:3-4).

How is your development coming?  In which of these areas do you need work?  In this New Year, why don’t you make plans to develop yourself in each of these areas?

May our gracious Lord give you a wonderful New Year!
