Who is Like the LORD?

God humbles Himself every time He listens to our prayer.

"Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high, Who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth!"

Psalm 113:5-6

What a question to be shouted out in God’s creation!  “Who is like unto the LORD our God?”  …And as the empty echo dies from the surrounding hills, there is nothing but silence left, for no one dare claim to be like our LORD…  There has never been and never will be any being as great as our God!  Who is compared with God?  No one.

We see that God is so great He lives “on high.”  Isaiah said of Him “The LORD is exalted; for he dwelleth on high,” (Isaiah 33:5a).  Jeremiah says that when it’s time for judgment upon the earth, “The LORD shall roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation…” (Jeremiah 25:30).  When Jesus was born, Zacharias, the godly priest, in his prophecy said of the Christ child, “Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring [Messiah] from on high hath visited us,” (Luke 1:78).  Do you see that this God who is so glorious lives “on high,” and yet He humbles Himself to visit man on earth.

We see in our verses for today that it is a humbling thing for God to stoop down and to look upon heaven and earth.  He condescends to visit us.  And because of the glory and majesty of who He is and where He is from, His condescension is that much more beautiful.  Jesus, the second person of the Godhead, laid aside His glory for a time, put on human flesh, became a man so that as a man He could give His life for mankind.  The song writer said, “the great Creator, became my Savior, and all God’s fullness dwelleth in Him.”  What humility.  What condescension!

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and
was made in the likeness of men:
And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient
unto death, even the death of the cross,” (Philippians 2:5-8).

If our LORD can humble Himself for us, can’t we humble ourselves to love and serve each other?
