Do You Have “Little Faith?”

Do you have "little faith," or do you trust God to meet all your needs?

"If then God so clothe the grass, which is today in the field, and tomorrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?"

Luke 12:28

“If then God so clothe the grass,”
God, our Creator, and sustainer has so set the natural laws that even the ordinary field grass receives His care.  Years ago, traveling in Colorado with my family during an exceptionally wet springtime, we witnessed the majestic display of colors in the grass and wildflowers in the mountains and prairies.  The vistas were glorious with myriad flora in endless shows.  God’s handiwork was so evident.  He is the “great Creator.”

“Which is today in the field, and tomorrow is cast into the oven;”
There’s not tremendous monetary value to a field of grass.  It is home and food for His creatures; otherwise, the greens in the prairie usually isn’t given a thought.  And yet God’s creative fingerprints are seen all over the prairies.  He cares even for the grass of the field.

Grass doesn’t last long, that’s the picture here. Today it is in the field, tomorrow it is the fuel in the oven to bake the bread.[1]  And yet God provides for the grass.  If He does that for grass, won’t He care for you?

“For all flesh is as grass and all the glory of man as the flower of grass.  The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth forever.  And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you” (1 Peter 1:24-25).

“How much more will he clothe you,”
Because our Heavenly Father sees you so much more valuable than grass, won’t He clothe you?  Jesus was stating the obvious.  If something so transient as common grass gets God’s attention, don’t you think He holds you in much higher esteem?  Will He not care, for you?

“And why take ye thought for raiment?  Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?” (Matthew 6:28-30).

“O ye of little faith?”
God’s child who doesn’t think God will clothe him/her, has a “little faith.”  This phrase, “O ye of little faith,” is used of those who don’t trust God for their clothing (Matthew 6:30, Luke 12:28).  It is also used about Jesus’ disciples when they feared for their lives in the storm (Matthew 8:26).  And Jesus repeated it to His disciples when they confused not having bread, with Jesus’ statement about the “leaven of the Pharisees (Matthew 16:8).

Believing friend, you have trusted the Lord Jesus for your salvation, you can trust Him daily to provide for your needs also.  He cares about mundane things, like food and clothing, why not trust Him to meet your needs in all parts of your life?  He cares for you!

“Work, like everything depends upon you; trust, like everything depends upon God.”

[1]  It is a common practice in parts of the world without much wood for the fire that grass is used to heat their earthenware ovens for baking.
