Walking In Him (Part 1)

Discipleship is establishing believers in the faith.  The roots go deep!  Jesus is my anchor point.

"As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:  Rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving."

Colossians 2:6-7

Part 1

“As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord,”
The Christian life begins when I “receive” Jesus Christ as my Savior from sin.

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12).

“Receiving” Him, is believing in Him.  Faith is imperative for salvation.  I trust in Him to save me, for I cannot save myself!

This phrase “Christ Jesus the Lord,” points to the fact that the “Christ” (the “anointed One,” the Messiah), is “Jesus the Lord.”  He is our Savior and Lord.

“But Ellicott well says that ‘the object [Christ] is so emphatically specified’ as to imply that ‘they [the Colossians] received … Christ Himself, in Himself the sum and substance of all teaching’.”[1]

“And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life” (1 John 5:11-12).

“So walk ye in him:”
As you have received the Lord Jesus by faith, keep on walking in Him.  To “walk in the Lord” is to have a way of life that keeps the Lord at its center.  It brings Him into all discussions and decisions.  It is living to bring glory to His name.  It is to put Him first in life, giving Him the preeminence (Colossians 1:18).

And then Paul writes two metaphors that help us to understand how we can begin to “walk in Him.”  Come back tomorrow and let’s see what many people sadly miss out on after their profession of faith.
