"For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods."
Psalm 95:3
“For the LORD is a great God,”
Our focus in our verse for today is on the LORD, Jehovah, for He is great! There is no other one so great as Jehovah. “But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king,” (Jeremiah 10:10). He is the only one to be worshipped. He alone is higher than any who have been worshipped as “gods.” He is above all others, there is no one else worthy of worship. He is above His created universe, there is nothing in it worthy of worship. He is our Sovereign, our Ruler, our Lord, and He alone is to be worshipped.
“And a great King above all gods.”
At first glance, this might look like it is saying that the Lord is the best one among many others. That is not the intent here. He is the only One, there are no others! No other gods exist. It’s not that man doesn’t worship other things as God, he does, but all those are all the fake, they are counterfeit, the demonic. There is nothing real about those “gods.” They are worthless, they provide nothing for their worshippers.
“But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased. Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat. They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them,” (Psalm 115:3-8).
In our verse, three of God’s names used.
Jehovah – He is the independent and self-existent God of revelation and redemption.
El – He is the strong one.
Elohim – He is the powerful, sovereign, majestic, Creator.
The God of the Bible, He is the only God, accept no substitutes!
