The Free Gift (Part 2)

Thank you, Lord, for your gift of eternal life.

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

Romans 6:23

Part 2

Yesterday:
“For the wages of sin is death;”
”The soul that sinneth, it shall die” (Ezekiel 18:20a). The bad news is, everyone who has sinned deserves to die, physically and spiritually.

Today:
The good news is, there is only one remedy, one hope for the sinner! Jesus!

“But the gift of God.”

God’s “free gift.”

His “gift of grace,” or this “free gift,” is the only hope for the guilty sinner, although this gift is never deserved by the sinner.  While the “wages of sin” are always earned, and the sinner gets what is coming to him, he will receive his rightful compensation, death!

This “gift of God” is never merited, because it is only offered as a “free gift” to a sinner who has no way to earn it and no money to buy it. It is too expensive to purchase, for it cost “the precious blood of Christ” to pay for it.  That’s why this gift is only given to a sinner by God’s grace.  A sinner who is utterly unworthy of it may receive it by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and His sacrifice on Calvary.

“But not as the offense, so also is the free gift.  For if through the offense of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.  And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offenses unto justification” (Romans 5:15-16).

“God’s gift is offered free of charge to any unworthy sinner, but salvation is not cheap!”

“Is eternal life.”

Here’s what God’s gift is “eternal life.”  “Death” is the eternal separation of the sinner from God.  “Eternal life” is the eternal fellowship of the saved sinner with God, and there is no separation from Him here.  Please note, the text says, “but the gift of God IS eternal life.”  This little verb “is” is so important.  It isn’t that this gift “will become” eternal life someday.  No, it IS eternal life, present tense.  As the sinner confesses his sin and calls upon Christ to save him, he receives God’s gift of “eternal life,” right then!  God’s gift is his, right now!

“Through Jesus Christ, our Lord.”
You may have seen advertisements that tell you all the places where you may buy some items you are interested in.  But there is only one place to go to get “eternal life,” and that is to the Lord Jesus Christ.  Salvation is only through Him.  You can’t get eternal life from your church.  Your pastor, priest, or rabbi cannot give you eternal life.  There is just one person who can provide eternal life for you,  it is Jesus.

Dear lost friend, you don’t dare wait until you die to see if God has forgiven your sins.  Then it is too late!  If you call upon Him today, He will save you, and His gift is yours!  There’s no waiting around until you die to see if you might live.  Presently you may have His free gift, right now, by simple faith in what God’s Son, Jesus did for you on the Cross.  He is “the way, the truth, and the life,” and He said, “no man comes to the Father but by me” (John 14:6).

Dear Lord, thank you for your gift of eternal life.  Without You, I would be eternally lost, but you have found me and given me your gift of life.
