“Our God Reigns!”

It is comforting to know that nothing can happen in this world without God's permission.

"The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved."

Psalm 93:1

“The LORD reigneth,”
What a thought, Jehovah is reigning in His universe! God is on His throne, and we have no concern that any being can usurp His reign and that He might be pushed off His throne by another. As long as Jehovah is reigning, His children are safe. Heaven and earth can rejoice because of His righteous rule.

“Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice: and let men say among the nations, The LORD reigneth,” (1 Chronicles 16:31).

The LORD reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof,” (Psalm 97:1).

As we proclaim His good news to the nations, “Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously,” (Psalm 96:10).  Even though the heathen rage (Psalm 2:1; 46:6; Acts 4:25), they will come under the authority of this just King.

God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness,” (Psalm 47:8).

“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!” (Isaiah 52:7).

After the Great Tribulation is ended, King Jesus Christ will sit upon the throne of “His father, David.”  In His royal authority, this earth will tremble in His presence.  Not only does our God reign now, but He will through all eternity.

The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved,” (Psalm 99:1).

“And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth,” (Revelation 19:6).

“He is clothed with majesty;”
The kings of the earth wear a crown and carry a scepter, but these are mere trappings, the representations, symbols of their power and majesty.  Not so of almighty God for majesty and strength are the LORD’s clothing, for He IS Majesty!  He is the exalted, sovereign One.  Isaiah said that “in the year that King Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and His train filled the Temple,” (Isaiah 6:1).  His train, His royal robes filled the Temple.  In the Orient, the large loose flowing robes were a picture of dignity and splendor that displayed the grandeur of the monarch.1  Surely God’s robes show us, the God of the Scriptures is the Majestic King!

O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:9).

“To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen,” (Judges 1:25).

“The LORD is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself:”
As our LORD is clothed in majesty so He is in strength (omnipotence).  In the land of Israel where men wore robes, it was a common practice for the men to “gird up their loins” when they needed to work or run.  This meant they gathered their robes around their waist and tied them up, so they were out of the way as they worked.  To see a man with his “loins girt up” meant he was working.

“As men gird up their loins for running or working, so the Lord appears in the eyes of his people to be preparing for action, girt with his omnipotence.  Strength always dwells in the Lord Jehovah, but he hides his power full often, until, in answer to his children’s cries, he puts on strength, assumes the throne, and defends his own,” – Spurgeon.2

In our verse, the LORD is “girded up” with His omnipotence.

“Which by his strength setteth fast the mountains; being girded with power,” (Psalm 65:6).

“The world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.”
The great, all-powerful Creator has set the world in its place.  He sustains this earth and keeps it running in its courses.  Neither man nor the stirrings of “nature” can destroy this planet. God has made our world firm and stable, He has “established” it.  Man cannot save that which he did not create.  We can be conservators of what God has shared with us by being His stewards.  But rest assured, the actions of man can never put the earth out of its place.

“The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein,” (Psalm 24:1).

Believer, please remember that no one has dethroned our God, and no one can.  He is reigning.  He is ever reigning over His Creation from His throne in heaven.  He is just a prayer away.  He has the strength to meet any need you have.

I see in this verse that My God Is the Sovereign of the Ages!
