God’s New Prophet (Part 2 of 2)

A Prophet like Moses is promised to come.  The world had better listen to Him!

December 5, 2020

"The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto Him, ye shall hearken."

Deuteronomy 18:15

Part 2

Yesterday:  A New Prophet
“The LORD thy God.”
Be sure you know where the voices you listen to have come from!  We hear the Lord’s men.

“Will raise up unto thee a Prophet.”
God’s promise for a new Prophet to come.

Today:  We Must Listen to this New Prophet

Where will this new Prophet come from, and what will He be like?

“From the midst of thee.”
A hint of where this Prophet will come from.  In the same way that Moses came from the Children of Israel, born to his parents Amram and Jochebed, during their extended stay in Egypt, so this new Prophet will come from the midst of Israel.

“Of thy brethren, like unto me.”
This Prophet will be a Jew as Moses was.  His line can be traced back to Abraham on Joseph’s side (Matthew 1:1-17) and back to Adam on Mary’s side of the family (Luke 3:23-38).  Move ahead two millennia, and one of Jesus’ new disciples looks for his brother,

“Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph” (John 1:45).

God did what He said He would do.

“Unto Him, ye shall hearken.”
Moses recognizes the fact that this new Prophet is from God.  Anything He says is from God Himself.  This new Prophet must be heard and obeyed, for He brings salvation!  The godly line will listen to and obey Him.  Sadly, with Israel, this was not to be.

“He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew him not.  He came unto His own, and His own received Him not” (John 1:10-11).

The leaders of Israel rejected Jesus’ attempts to save them.

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!” (Luke 13:34).

And so the ungodly line and the godly line carry on.  But the good news is that some did listen to Him and believed in Him.  And today, this is still a wonderful, comforting truth!

“But as many as received Him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name” (John 1:12).

Indeed, this new Prophet is God’s special revelation to mankind.

Quote:  “And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited His people” (Luke 7:16).
