God’s Gift of Light

Thank you, Lord, for your gift of protection, grace, and glory.

"For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly."

Psalm 84:11

“For the LORD God is a sun and shield:”
Jehovah is good to protect us.  When all is dark, and we have trouble finding our way, He is our “sun,” and He is our light and warms our hearts.

When life overwhelms us, and it appears that we will never survive, He is our shield.  He is always there for us with His grace.

“The LORD will give grace and glory:”

“The Lord will give grace and glory.”  “Both in due time, both as needed, both to the full, both with absolute certainty”[1] (Spurgeon).

Jehovah gives us His loving favor.  He is gracious to His child.  Paul learned about God’s grace when he asked the Lord to remove his “thorn in the flesh.”

“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.  Most gladly, therefore, will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

And He gives glory to His child.  He honors His child.  To Solomon the LORD said,

“And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honor: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days” (1 Kings 3:13).

To His child today He says,

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).

“No good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.”
Here’s the key phrase!  He has good things for the ones who are walking uprightly.

A walk is a continuous movement, putting one foot in front of the other, taking steps.  “Walking” means we have not arrived yet.  But we who love the Lord are walking with Him, in His direction.  We are striving to live right.

“He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart” (Psalm 15:2).

“I was also upright before him, and I kept myself from mine iniquity” (Psalm 18:23).

LORD, thank you for protecting me from all dangers and teaching me of your grace and glory for me.
