God Promises Immanuel (Part 2 of 2)

God's Son was promised to be born of a virgin, this is how the God-Man entered this world.

"Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel."

Isaiah 7:14

Part 2

Yesterday:  God’s Special Message!
“Therefore, the Lord himself shall give you a sign.”
This “sign” is from God, their Adonai!

Today:  Immanuel is Virgin Born!

“Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son.”

“Behold.”  Now Judah, pay special attention here!

“A virgin shall conceive and bear a son.”  Yes, a virgin, a woman who has never had a sexual relationship with a man, will conceive and give birth to a son.[1]  God had explained to Adam and Eve that the woman’s seed will be a son (Genesis 3:15).[2]  Immanuel’s birth will be miraculous![3]

“And shall call His name Immanuel.”
Indeed, this is an unusual name.  The Hebrew word means, “God with us.”  It is God who has put on human flesh!  He is the God-Man.  He has all of the attributes of deity.  He has all the characteristics of humans, minus the effects of a sin nature.  He will be born without any taint of sin in Him.  Truly Jesus is “God with us!”

This phrase, “God with us” is used by Isaiah to rally God’s people during the coming crisis in Israel, the invasion of Assyria.

“And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel” (Isaiah 8:8).

“Take counsel together, and it shall come to naught; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us” (Isaiah 8:10).

What powerful words for all believers today, “God is with us!”

Quote:  “If we could condense all the truths of Christmas into only three words, these would be the words: ‘God with us’” [4] (John MacArthur).

[1] While this prophecy, as do others, has a “near fulfillment,” that happened quickly in Ahaz’s day.  A young woman had a child.  This prophecy also had its “far fulfillment” in Mary, a young virgin giving birth without human intervention, to a Son, Jesus.  Matthew also makes Jesus’ Virgin Birth plain, “Behold, a virgin (Parthenos) shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us” (Matthew 1:23).
[2] “His heel,” indicates the coming Savior is a male child.
[3] Two vital doctrines are revealed in this passage.  The Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ.  And the Incarnation of Jesus Christ.  One is not possible without the other!  Both doctrines are essential if Jesus Christ is to be the Redeemer.
