Big Mercy

Even as Heaven is beyond our understanding, so is His great mercy to us that fear Him.

"For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him."

Psalm 103:11

How big is God’s great mercy?  Mercy is not something that we usually think of in terms of size.  Mercy is mercy.  It is God keeping from us the consequence or punishment we deserve for our sin/guilt.  He does not grant us mercy based on any merit of our own, but solely upon His goodness.  The scriptures teach us that our God is a God of mercy.  To emphasize the fact of God’s incredible generosity with His kindness, David compares it to the height of heaven above the earth.  He likes the imagery of the height of the clouds and the heavens.

Thy mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds,” (Psalm 36:5).

“For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens,” (Psalm 89:2).

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts,” Isaiah 55:9).

“For thy mercy is great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds,” (Psalm 57:10).

In our verse for today, mercy is freely given to those who “fear Him.”  Those who have that reverential awe of God, that have a deep respect for Him, to those who listen to the LORD in obedience, there is mercy.

“Let them now that fear the LORD say, that his mercy endureth for ever,” (Psalm 118:4).

Believer, how much mercy do you need?  Because of God’s goodness, there is plenty of mercy as we need it.  Surely His great mercy goes up to the heavens.  Let’s thank Him for His constant care for us.
