A Special Child is Coming! (Part 1 of 4)

God will come to earth as a little child so that He can save sinners from their sin.

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

Isaiah 9:6

Part 1

Today:  A Child Born, A Son Given

Isaiah said a Savior is coming.  God told Adam and Eve that He will be the answer to the needs of the world.  He will save and lead the godly human line.  He will evangelize the ungodly humans.  And Moses understood that this new Prophet will come from within Israel.  Isaiah knew that this promised child will be virgin born.  This child will be unique from all others.  Today’s verse is Isaiah’s description of the Messiah who will come and reign on David’s throne.  These words he wrote as he was led by the Holy Spirit.  This detailed prediction he made 700 years before the birth of Jesus Christ.

“For unto us, a child is born.”

“For unto us.”  This human child’s birth will benefit the entire world.  God will come and live with mankind (Immanuel).  The blessing of salvation He will bring and share it with the Jews first, and then it will be given to the Gentiles (Romans 1:16; 2:9-10).  After this miraculous birth, the angel will proclaim,

“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11).

This child that is to be born will be that “Seed of the woman,”[1] the “new Prophet,”[2] and the virgin-born child of Isaiah’s prophecy.[3]  In our verse for today, Isaiah speaks again of this unique child’s birth.

“Unto us, a son is given.”
This baby to be born is not just any child, but a male child, a boy.  He is the Son of God, the second person of the Trinity.  He will add humanity to His deity.  Of this baby boy, Jehovah will proclaim, after His crucifixion and when He is raised from the dead,

“I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee” (Psalm 2:7).

It is this “only begotten Son,” that will provide for sinners, God’s grace gift of salvation, that none of us can claim to be worthy of.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

Yes, “unto us, a child is born, and a Son is given!”  The godly line of humans can “praise God from whom all blessings flow!”  He is our Savior, Lord, and King.

How does Isaiah describe this coming child?  Tomorrow we will look at some of His personal characteristics.  Please come back then!
